東京のバンドlangが八月二九日に新作EP「cahier（カイエ）」を公開した。cahierはフランス語でノートという意味（らしい）。スペインで収録された2018年公開の2ndフルアルバム、「There is no reply, but sweet wind blew」以降のリリースとなる。
一曲目「透明な過去の町で」。短いが、迫力のあるイントロ。新鮮なギターとドラムと共に、langの独特なスポークンワードとスクリーモのボーカルが滑らかにすれ違う。一つだけ文句があるとしたら、短すぎるくらいだけだ。
二曲目「夜の葦」。イントロはマイナーなトーンで始まり、ボーカルが入ると希望を持たせてくれるが、中間から別れの挨拶に変化する。エンディングで鳥肌が立った。
三曲目「辺縁に立っている」。スタンダードな激情スタイル。後半でギター・ベース・ドラムのリズムがカッコよすぎる。
四曲目「柄」。ファーストアルバム「調べ」から再収録。EP版はテンポが少しだけ遅いようだ。両バージョンを比べて聞くと、明らかにレコーディングクオリティが上がってる。「調べ」のバージョンはDIYっぽさがあって好きだが、新バージョンを聞くと、どれだけlangが進化しているか明らかになる。
五曲目「空の足跡」。二十七日にMV公開。こりゃ名曲だ。個人的にlangの曲で一番好きかもしれない。前半は末頼もしい感じがするが、エンディングはとても切ない。最後の歌詞「返して/返しておくれよ/あの海の匂いや/遠くの雨雲も/あの家の曲がり角の色を」は特に心に響いた。MVもとても素敵なのでオススメです。
最後の感想。皆そうだと思うが、2020年は個人的に最悪な年だった。しかし、langの「cahier」は私に希望を持たせてくれた。このバンドの未来はこのEPのように輝いている。
Hailing from Tokyo, Japan, spoken-word/screamo band lang released a new EP titled "cahier" on August 29th. Cahier means notebook or journal in French. The EP is a follow-up to the band's sophomore album, "There is no reply, but sweet wind blew", which was recorded in Spain and released back in 2018.
1st song: "Toumei na kako no machi de/In a transparent town from the past". It's a short but sweet intro to the EP. lang's unique spoken word and screamed vocals mix smoothly on top of the crisp guitar and drums. If I had to make one complaint, it'd be that the song isn't long enough!
2nd song: "Yoru no ashi/Night reeds". The song begins with a minor tone but when the vocals come in, the vibes become a bit more hopeful. However, the second half of the song transforms into a somber goodbye, with the end of the song leaving me with goosebumps.
3rd song: "Hennen ni tatteiru/Consciousness". Standard screamo style song (nothing wrong with that ofc), with some pretty sick rhythms toward the end.
4th song: "Tsuka/Haft". A re-recording from their first LP, "Shirabe". The newer version is a bit slower. Listening to both versions back-to-back, you can hear that recording quality isn't the only thing that improved. The first version has a charming DIY quality to it, but this version exemplifies just how much lang has transformed over the years.
5th song: "Sora no ashiato/Footsteps from the sky". One of my favourite songs from lang. The first half of the song has a bright quality to it, however by the ending, it's a melancholic lament regarding the past. The ending lyrics really hit home for me: "Give it back/Please give it back/The smell of the ocean/The rainclouds in the distance/The colour of that house's street corner". They released a spectacular music video for this track on the 27th of August - please go give it a watch!
Final thoughts: I think it's safe to say that 2020 has been the worst year in recent memory for most of us. However, lang's "cahier" gave me hope for the future - this band's future is as bright as this EP is.
